I am an attorney with thirty (30) years of litigation experience. As I contemplated retirement from a small litigation law firm back in 2001, I thought that I had a concrete plan.

My oldest daughter was in the firm and had been mentored by our Senior Associate Kevin Scionti for fourteen (14) years.

Unfortunately Kevin died suddenly of an aneurysm and my retirement plans were set back a few years. Kevin had complained of “burn out” but at age forty three (43) I thought he was kidding.

Like most litigation attorneys, the hours are long and stressful. The drive to
get a good result for a client being sued for millions takes its toll on the proper diet, exercise, family and healthful living. As such lawyer “burn out”
sets in at mid life and beyond for most litigators.

“Burn Out” is typical for Class A personalities who put the drive to achieve before everything else. Many professionals and hard working people find themselves in this category.

I had often read about Costa Rica and its laid back life style, its superb medical care system, and most recently I read the book Costa Rica – The Last Country The Gods Made with photography by Kimberly Parsona and text by Adrian Colesberry and Brian McLea. This is a must read for anyone interested in Costa Rica.

After regular visits for several months, and being the typical age sixty (60)
plus lawyer with hypertension, high cholesterol and manageable diabetes, I thought it wise to “test” the Costa Rican medical system. What happened next convinced me that Costa Rica was for me.

Scott Oliver, creator of WeLoveCostarica.com website and author of Costa Rica’s Guide To Making Money Offshore and How To Buy Costa Rica Real Estate Without Losing Your Camisa, referred me
to a physician at my request.

Scott is probably the best resource person for foreigners in Costa Rica. I was
referred to Dr. Eduardo at the CIMA Medical Center. CIMA is widely accepted as being the best hospital in Central
America. Dr. Eduardo works closely with Dr. Carlos. Both Doctors are bilingual.

On a recent visit and in contemplation of spending more time in the “Costa
Rica – The Last Country The God’s Made”, I went to see my new Doctor.

I was given an in-depth medical examination with a host of blood test, including an electrocardiogram. To my delight, and with no prior notice, the Doctor dropped by my hotel and left me his cell phone, house phone and emergency numbers with a personal note wishing me an enjoyable stay in Costa Rica. The doctor’s examination was $50 and I paid a little over $300 for the complete blood work, electrocardiogram and a 24 hour urine test.

So I ask the question, have you ever had your physician personally hand deliver to your house anything?

After taking a long hike and fishing for trout in a mountain stream, and enjoying a succulent flavor of fresh trout cooked in wild herbs, our group of retiring “baby boomers” discussed that our blood pressure readings were down an average of twenty (20) points.

A few days later, I found a large plot of land in the mountains with about four
houses and a large meadow with fruit trees and a wide assortment of flowers. It
was then that the concept of Bellaterra Retreat was born. Bellaterra is Italian
for “beautiful land”.

I said to myself; “why not share my experiences with other ‘burnt out’ lawyers?
Why not let them experience first hand the ‘life prolonging’ experience of retreating to Bellaterra and while they are at it, why not do some Continuing Legal Education (CLE) to write off the expense of the experience of a life time?”
