We broke ground on January 17, 2012. We are officially into our fifth month of construction and things are moving along on our ocean view home near Pirate’s Bay (Bahia del Pirata) in Guanacaste.

Our new home will consist of three bedrooms plus office and 3 bathrooms, living/kitchen area, pool with outdoor covered living area and two-car garage. The house will be three stories (with the garage being the only thing on the ‘first/ground’ level).

The house is about 2,800 square feet including the terraces and garage and sits on a 1,300 m2 lot.

The main highlights of this month is that the top level of the house is complete and the roof sheathing is about 90% complete. The tiles for the roof (which are actually not real clay tile) will go up starting on Tuesday.

The roof we chose to use is a 100% recycled plastic and does not crack when you walk on it plus it’s less maintenance than a tile roof which is why we chose to go with that material.

The stairs leading up to the top floor are complete and the bedrooms and baths on the top floor are completely framed in. The insulation is on site which will be installed this coming week. It’s starting to look like a real house!

The swimming pool is now completely done, just waiting for the pool contractor to come and finish it off with a quartz surface. We opted to use quartz because it’s more durable and lasts longer than other pool finishes. This will be one of the last things done on the house.

Around the pool, patio and balconies, we will use a contemporary teak railing with steel cables. We chose this type of railing to not lose the quality of the ocean view but still keep the area safe for our children and guests.

The window company came to do the official measurements of our new windows. The main living area will consist of floor-to-ceiling glass sliders to not lose the ocean and mountain views. The door system will be recessed on the main level that leads out to the covered rancho and pool area.

We did another trip to San Jose and were able to choose a wood floor (which we will use on the top level only). We also chose the interior solid wood doors, which are beautiful and should really give a great dimension to the rooms.

We also ordered most of our kitchen appliances from the duty-free zone. We plan to use GE Monogram stainless steel appliances which we were able to pick up at a great price through a contact of mine who buys in bulk in Golfito–the duty free zone in Costa Rica.

It’s the “Green” or rainy season in Guanancaste so we’ve been pretty lucky as so far as it has been a mild rainy season and has not delayed the contruction.

This is part five of our story and we’ll continue to keep you posted. Ground breaking was January 17, 2012, top of the dry season in Guanacaste. We were told by our builder that we’ll be in our home by October 1st. We shall see!
