It’s always amusing listening to how serious some people seem to take statistics based on pure BS or pura porquería!

Someone will write to me saying that: “XX% of North Americans move back to the U.S. within XX years…”

And I say: “Uhuh! What do you think that means? Where did you get those numbers from?

Because as far as I know there is no way on planet earth that Costa Rica has that data.

And are they talking about legal, permanent residents of Costa Rica?

Retired people or business people like me?

Are they referring to permanent tourists who leave every 90 days?

But this gentleman seemed to think he had uncovered some dirty little secret because “an old dude” he knew left Costa Rica after living here for just over 13 years…

And?

It might be important to remember that according to the United States Census:

“Using 2007 ACS data, it is estimated that a person in the United States can expect to move 11.7 times in their lifetime…”

According to the CIA – and we know they would never lie to us, right? – The life expectancy of the average American is 78.62 years (at #51 on the global scale of life expectancy) then we should expect a move every 6.7 years, or every 5.18 years if we just consider their adult years, no? In which case if this “old dude” has been in one place in Costa Rica for 13+ years then he’s been here a lot longer than the
average, right?

[custom_script adID=150]

Which would suggest that this dude has been happier than the average person in that one place and this would probably be considered positive news, no? Moving to Costa Rica is an adventure for sure but moving here doesn’t have to mean that you stay here for the rest of your life….

You may want to fall in love with another culture and enjoy a fresh, new adventure… Fantastic!
