If you are a serious surfer, you have to travel.  If you travel to surf, you have to at one point in your life make it to surf Witches Rock and Ollie’s point.

Witches Rock with it’s iconic backdrop is probably one of the most well known surf locations on earth.  I have been told that zillions of years ago,  the rock was puked up out of a volcano 60 miles away.  The surf must have been pretty gnarly that day!

To surf Witches Rock and Ollies, you have to get their by boat.  I choose to leave from Playa del Coco to minimize the length of the ride home but there are charters that leave from as far south as Tamarindo.

The guys I have been using for the past few years are La Bruja Surf Trips out of Coco. La Bruja Surf Trips  Nice boat, excellent service and you park at his house where after surfing your brains out all day, you can rinse off and lie about all the awesome waves you got over a few beers.

Tips to having an epic boat trip are;

  • Wear sun block
  • Hydrate
  • Bring sun protection- Hat, sunglasses, rash guard
  • Bring diaper rash ointment- Surfing for 7 hours will rub you raw
  • Bring extra equipment including board, fins, leash, wax, etc,.
  • Rain jacket- Believe it or not, if it rains and you don’t have this or a neoprene jacket, you will freeze your butt off
  • Make sure you have a good captain and that they bought permits for you to enter the national park or you will be sent home if caught. (bummer)
  • Know the rules of the ocean and follow them, including basic surf etiquette.
  • Bring a six-pack for after you surf your brains out, it will be the best beer you ever had!

Witches Rock can get big and powerful while Ollies tends to be smaller and much easier for less skilled surfers to ride so a day trip something for everyone.

To me, this is the best time of the year to go so what are you waiting for?!
